It’s been a big year for WreckSploration, a unique and exciting initiative dedicated to exploring, preserving, and educating the public about Western Australia’s deep-water shipwrecks and beyond.
What is Wrecksploration?
Formed after OzTek 2022, the WreckSploration team of technical divers from Perth have been working to create photogrammetry models of shipwrecks from around the world. This cutting-edge technology enables the team to capture detailed 3D models of wrecks, preserving them digitally for future generations and allowing both divers and non-divers to explore these fascinating relics without ever getting wet.
Diving beyond 50 metres, the WreckSploration team uses rebreathers to maximise their dive time and successfully survey wrecks that are otherwise inaccessible. By bringing these wrecks into the public eye through technology, WreckSploration is helping to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our underwater heritage.
Exploring the Rottnest Ships Graveyard
One of the standout projects that WreckSploration is currently working on is the Rottnest Ships Graveyard. Located to the southwest of Rottnest Island, this area has been the final resting place for various vessels since 1910, with 47 known wrecks lying at depths between 58m and 200m. The team, in collaboration with the WA Museum, is working to survey and identify these wrecks using photogrammetry, providing valuable data that supplements historical research. So far, they have already made strides in surveying wrecks like the Ex HMAS Junee, SS Cape Otway, and The Gunga, offering 3D models for public viewing and further study.
